Thank you to all who applied for the winter internship position! We will be reopening an internship position in the summer, so please feel free to send your resume in February!
Hello Productions receives tons of resumes and inquiries as to how to break into the event planning business. For awhile, we were answering each one personally. Although we'd LOVE to answer all of your questions personally, we just don't have the time.
Here is the advice we give to all inspiring event and wedding planners:
As easy and fun as event planning may seem, it takes a lot of work. Why do you think Donald Trump's show The Apprentice uses "plan an event" as the final task each season? Because it shows him who really has what it takes to be organized, creative, task-oriented, calm, and a leader. You can't just jump into this job. Clients expect YOU to be the expert and have little patience for your learning curve.

SO, you need to get experience. But, where? Non-profits host several galas and social events throughout the year to fundraise for their cause. Volunteer. Start by helping them set-up, run their registration, greet their guests... anything to understand the workings of the day-of logistics. If you want to actually invest your every day to learning about event planning, WORK for non-profit. You will learn how to plan an event from beginning to end with little or no budget. It teaches you how to ask for things (sometimes beg for things) and be creative in your methods.
It takes tenacity and dedication. Ask local event planners if you can help them at an event for free just to get the
experience. Wedding planners usually always take an assistant. Be patient. I'm sure they all receive just as many resumes as we do. You have to understand that even accepting your free help at an event takes time out of their schedule. They would usually require meeting you beforehand to make sure you can represent their company in the highest light.
Hope this helps and don't give up!
